PURPOSE:
An honorary educational society which provides a structured reading program to club women that is educational and stimulates a desire for self-fulfillment.
MEMBERSHIP STANDARDS:
PLEDGE: One who has obtained a GFWC E.S.O. Handbook from the GFWC/Iowa Headquarters’ Office and is working to qualify for membership. At least one book report must be filed every calendar year to keep the file active.
MEMBER: One who has read at least 16 books from four (4) categories and filed book reports on them. It is preferred that reports be filed in groups of four. Members will receive certificates at the annual state convention and will be qualified to buy and wear the ESO pin.
STAR LEVEL: A member who continues to read and file reports on four (4) books from six (6) additional categories. She will receive a certificate.
TORCH LEVEL: A member who completes and reports on four (4) books from six (6) different categories. She will be eligible to purchase and wear the Torch Guard on her ESO pin. A certificate will be awarded.
CENTURY AWARD: Certificates will be awarded to those members who
read 100 books.
There are also certificates available for the “Second
Century”, 200 books, and the “Third Century”, 300 books.

Any E.S.O. Handbook may be used. New handbooks are published every two years.
